Long weekends are a great opportunity to get away, but finding pet care at the last minute can be stressful. Whether you need dog boarding, cat drop-ins, house sitting, or care for another type of pet, a little preparation can make the experience much easier.
Book your pet sitter early
Pet sitters often fill their schedules quickly before a long weekend. Start searching as soon as you know your travel dates, especially if your pet needs medication, has separation anxiety, or requires someone with specific experience.

Arrange a meet and greet
Whenever possible, meet your sitter before the booking. This gives your pet time to become familiar with them and allows you to discuss the care routine in person.
During the meeting, watch how the sitter interacts with your pet. A good sitter should respect your pet's boundaries, ask thoughtful questions, and make you feel comfortable leaving your pet in their care.
Write down the daily routine
Even if you explain everything during the meet and greet, leave written instructions covering:

Give yourself time before leaving
Avoid rushing through the handoff right before your trip. Double check that the sitter has access to your home or, if boarding, that your pet sitter has everything they need.
The goal is for you to leave feeling confident and for your pet's routine to feel as normal as possible.
